Eight recipients of the Resource Recovery National Certificate received their wards from the Minister of the Environment, Dr Nick Smith, in the Beehive on the evening of Thursday, 24 September 2009.
They were: Marty Hoffart (Waste Watchers, Tauranga), Rick Thorpe and Jaqui Forbes (Xtreme Waste, Raglan), Jonathan Hannon (Zero Waste Academy, Palmerston North), Sheryl Stivens and Sharon Breakwell (Canterbury Wastebusters, Ashburton), Karen Noble (Central Otago Wastebusters) and Peter Simpson (Wanaka Wastebusters). Daniel Robson (Metalcorp NZ, Christchurch) received a certificate in Scrap Metal Recycling, Level 2.
The National Certificate is part of a suite of qualifications that have been introduced to bring vital skills to the workforce and provide defined career pathways. All of the recipients participated in a Pilot Training and Assessment Workshop for Zero Waste and Resource Recovery (Level 3) which was designed to kick-start the delivery of new national qualifications, and road test them with a group of experienced community recyclers.
Kevin Walker, CEO of EXITO (Extractive Industries Training Organisation), said that the course had been designed by people in the industry for the industry having been developed by EXITO’s Resource Recovery and Solid Waste Sector Advisory Group.
“The resource recovery industry is a vibrant, growing industry comprised of a disverse range of commercial and community interests. It provides environmental services to many other industries that make critical contributions to New Zealand’s economy and sustainable development.
“This contribution wil be greatly enhanced by the development of an effective and integrated industry training strategy.
“EXITO’s role is to set the standards for industry training and national qualifications and over the past five years the Resource Recovery Advisory Group has worked tirelessly to develop a suite of 18 national qualifications,” he said.
